I’m a huge fan of Guy Raz’s How I Built This podcast. I’ve been following it for the past couple of years and genuinely think it’s one of the best podcasts in the space. I just love the interviews.
Heard Janice Bryant Howroyd, CEO of The ACT-1 Group, the largest privately held, woman owned workforce solutions company founded in the U.S. While the interview itself was fascinating, Janice shared a very important point when it comes to managing people. I couldn’t help but pullover and take notes!
Here’s what Janice thinks we can’t teach people:
- To be confident
- Experience
- Common sense
- Who know it all
- Anything they don’t want to learn
That’s so darn true! Yet, leaders and managers across corporates commit the same damn mistake over and over again. No wonder we fail because there are a lot of things we can teach people but the five things above just cannot be taught.
How do I know? I’ve tried to and have failed miserably. I wish I’d heard this a decade back. But then, that wouldn’t have given me the experience I have with me right now.
