Make it easy. Make it just work.

Besides being successful technology companies, what do Apple, Netflix, Zoom, and Amazon have in common? They’ve got the basics right, kept it simple, and they have always “just worked.” Period.

But we know simple ain’t easy. It’s so damn hard to create something that seems easy. Yet, that’s exactly what these companies did to grow into the behemoths (household names?) they’ve become. Of course, there’s also a risk that these products can be easily abused. (Cough! Cough! Cough! Zoom! Cough!) But what’s success without any risks?

And while I was mulling over the simplicity of these fantastic products that I use on a daily basis, I couldn’t help but draw parallels to our own lives. Particularly, our habits. Because 8 out of 10 people I coach or consult with struggle with building and maintaining lasting habits. It’s the number one reason why people gravitate towards self-help books, YouTube videos, and (when they get really serious) hire experts!

After years of coaching and developing leaders I can conclude the whole habit forming dilemma with just two proven suggestions:

  1. What aspects in our lives can we simplify? (If this calls for eliminating a bunch of things, so be it. Deferring isn’t an option.)
  2. What are the top 3 high-value things you want to do first thing upon waking up? (Doesn’t matter if you wake up at 4 in the morning or 7.)

That’s about it!

Simple? Yes. Easy? Absolutely no! It usually takes 2-3 weeks to eliminate the non-essentials and nail down on that ultimate routine that you can blindly follow without any friction. It’s got to be automatic. It has to “just work.”

And if you’re beginning to suspect that simplicity is the overlooked secret to “making it” in life or business, you would be right.
