Don’t be an asshole!

Probably the best advice you’re ever going to get, yet most thought leaders won’t dare to say it out aloud. There’s too much at stake. Or perhaps, it’s just safe to stay away from controversies.

The best “people” advice I share with any (wannabe) leader, manager, or even individual contributors working with teams is this — don’t be an asshole.

Be useful to the others who’re counting on you.
Be kind to the folks who you’re counting on.
Be reasonable with your expectations.
Be trusting so they can trust you back.
Be humble because you don’t have all the answers.

That, in essence, is what not being an asshole is all about.

P.S. Could this be the filthiest explanation of “influence” in leadership literature?
